When I first moved to New York, I lived in the West Village on Horatio Street. Sevilla Restaurant was one of my favorite go-to spots, and it was there that I first fell in love with Sangria. Theirs was so delicious and so refreshing, it inspired me to create my own version.

Red Sangria at Sevilla Restaurant

If you are not familiar with Sangria, it is a wine punch native to Spain, Portugal, and Argentina. It traditionally consists of red wine, chopped fruit, a little honey or sugar, and a hint of brandy…but you can really play around with it and even use white wine instead of red if you prefer.

All these years later I still think Sangria is the best Summer cocktail for entertaining. You can make pitchers of it ahead of time and keep them cold in the fridge. It is beautiful, colorful, inexpensive (you definitely don’t need to use your best bottle of wine, the flavors of the fruit will dominate anyway), both men and women enjoy it, and it is sexy!!

Whatever your plans for this fourth of July, add in a pitcher of Sangria (or two, or three) and your guests will love you for it! Many of my warm weather Flirting With Flavors Cooking Parties feature a seasonal version made with the best local fruit I can find.

Happy Independence Day!!
